Derry City made it back-to-back wins in the Premier Division with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Sligo Rovers at the Brandywell Stadium.

Danny Mullen opened the scoring after 14 minutes before Gavin Whyte added a second with a terrific solo effort as the Candystripes led 2-0 at half-time.

Mullen headed in shortly after the restart for his second and Derry's third to secure the win.

Tiernan Lynch's men stay sixth just three points off top spot with Sligo still propping up the table.

The Foylesiders had got back to winning ways on Friday, coming away from Galway with a 3-2 victory.

Mullen and Whyte were both on the scoresheet on that occasion and it wasn't long before the former had the Candystripes ahead against Sligo.

Whyte's blocked effort fell kindly for Mullen, who fired past Sam Sargeant and into the net on 14 minutes.

Midway through the first period, Derry's lead was doubled by a fine individual goal from Whyte.

He picked up the ball well inside his own half, raced past Jake Doyle-Hayes and kept his composure to coolly slide the ball past the advancing Sargeant.

Any hopes of a revival from the league's basement side after the break were swiftly wiped out when Mullen nodded in Derry's third at the front post.

Substitute Liam Boyce was lively and had a couple of chances to add to City's lead.

It finished 3-0 though and next up for Derry is a long trip to take on Waterford, who are just above Sligo in the standings, on Friday night.
