In June, Hodgkinson retained her European 800m title despite struggling with illness. Though that prevented her from winning by the margin perhaps expected - with both a personal best and season's best time more than three seconds faster than anyone else in the final - she held off Slovakia's silver medallist Gabriela Gajanova by just 0.14 seconds.

Just days before the Olympics, Hodgkinson set a national 800m record of one minute 54.61 seconds at the London Diamond League. "I'm feeling really good and confident," she said afterwards.

5 August, 2024 - the date Hodgkinson's wait for a global title ended. She dominated the Olympic 800m final to win gold in Paris, crossing the line in one minute 56.72 seconds.

Hodgkinson's win marked Great Britain's first Olympic track title since Mo Farah won the 5,000m and 10,000m double at Rio 2016. She became only the 10th British woman to win athletics gold at a Games.

Ethiopia's Tsige Duguma (1:57.15) won silver while world champion Mary Moraa (1:57.42) had to settle for third at the Stade de France, as Hodgkinson became the third British woman to win the Olympic 800m title - and first since Kelly Holmes in Athens 20 years ago.
