Guernsey's Tom Druce says he is aiming for a personal best time at the European Athletics Classic in Slovenia.

Guernsey's 400m record holder hopes to be selected for the GB relay team for the London Olympics and says Thursday's race is key to that bid.

Druce's preparations have been hampered by a shin injury which has forced him to miss much of his winter training.

"If I run a personal best I can't be dissatisfied with it, but hopefully it'll be a substantial PB," he said.

The race will be the last for the reigning Island Games 400m champion before the British trials in 10 days time.

"I've only been training for two months because of the injury, so I've had a pretty rushed preparation, but I've done the best that I can so I'll go and see what I've got.

"I'm also mindful that the weather is poor in England so the trials might not be a chance to run a fast time so this is a potentially the last opportunity to get a time down to push me up the rankings for that all-important selection meeting which will happen a week after the trials," he told BBC Guernsey.

And Druce says he will need to slash at least half-a-second off his best time to get into the squad for Olympics.

"To get in the London team it's going to have to be a pretty good time in the high-45 range because everyone is stepping up this year because it's Olympic year so you'd expect nothing less.

"I've put in all the work that I could in the short time that I've had post-injury so I've just got to cross my fingers and hope that it's in me and put it down on the track on Thursday."
