Mo Farah wins Great North City Games two-mile race

Double Olympic champion Mo Farah ended his season by winning the two-mile race at the Great North City Games on the Newcastle-Gateshead quayside.

Farah spent much of the race on the shoulder of Australian Collis Birmingham before easing away to win in eight minutes, 40.04 seconds.

"He dug in early on. That was tough," said 29-year-old Farah.

"It's been hard work since the Olympics, but this run in front of home fans was one to enjoy."

Having opted out of competing in Sunday's Great North Run, Farah said he now intends to take a short break.

"I won't be thinking about any running in the next two weeks. I will go out for a couple of meals with my friends and family. It's important that I enjoy it and take a break and take my mind off running," he said.

Chris Tomlinson won the long jump with a jump of 8.23m, 42cm longer than Olympic champion Greg Rutherford's best effort, but Tomlinson admitted that finishing sixth at London 2012 still hurt.

"Of course it is a case of what might have been. There were 40 athletes at the Olympics and only one jumped well. I think it's been a very poor year in long jump because so many people have been injured."

Lawrence Clarke, fourth in the Olympics, finished third in the 110m hurdles behind American pair Jason Richardson and Ryan Wilson.

"I got an amazing start, but these guys got ahead of me at the back end," said Clarke.
