Jessica Ennis opts to miss indoor season after Olympic gold

Olympic heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis will not compete indoors during 2013 as she targets winning gold at this summer's World Championships.

Ennis, 27, said she returned to winter training after her gold-medal success at London 2012 undecided about whether to participate in the indoor season.

"My focus has to be attempting to win another world title and not the short-term indoor season," she said.

The Sheffield athlete plans to open her outdoor season at Meadowbank on 8 June.

It is, however, too early to say what events Ennis may compete in at the Women's League match at the Edinburgh venue.

She won gold at the 2009 World Championships in Berlin and is aiming for her second title when Russian capital Moscow hosts the event in August.

UK Athletics head coach Peter Eriksson said he was "100%" behind Ennis's decision.

"Jess is a very mature and seasoned athlete who is focused on performing at her best in major championships," he added.

Ennis' long-time coach Toni Minichiello lost his UK Athletics funding in January after deciding to stay in Ennis' home city of Sheffield rather than relocate to Loughborough.

He is in talks over a possible consultancy role with UK Athletics and insists he will remain as Ennis' coach regardless.
