Amy Foster fifth in 100m final at World University Games

Amy Foster finished fifth in Monday's 100 metres final at the World University Games in Russia.

The University of Ulster sprinter clocked 11.50, which is just 0.01 outside the Northern Ireland record she jointly holds with Anna Boyle.

Foster was second fastest in her semi-final earlier on Monday, running 11.61 in Kazan.

The 24-year-old was sixth quickest of the qualifiers from Sunday's opening heats, posting a time of 11.60.

Foster will also compete in the 200m along with Ireland team-mate Niamh Whelan.

Whelan has a faster personal best for the distance of 23.30, while Foster qualified for the 200m in the last World University Games and has run 23.59 this season.

Foster ran 11.49 for the second time in her career at the Mary Peters International meeting in Belfast on 25 June to equal the 100m NI record with Boyle.

Meanwhile, Jason Harvey and Letterkenny athletes Mark English and Darren McBrearty have been named on a strong Ireland team for next week's European Under-23 Championships in Tampere, Finland.

Harvey will compete in the 400m hurdles along with Irish team-mate Thomas Barr.

The northerner clocked a new personal best of 50.27 last month while Barr improved his best to 50.00 at the Cork City Sports earlier this week.

English will be fancied for a medal in the 800m after finishing fifth in a high-class World Junior final last year while McBrearty will compete in the 1500m alongside in-form Paul Robinson.
