Chijindu Ujah breaks 10 second barrier in Netherlands

Chijindu Ujah became the fifth Briton to dip under the 10-second barrier, clocking 9.96 seconds in the 100m at the FBK Games in the Netherlands.

The Londoner, 20, is third on the UK all-time list, with only 1992 Olympic champion Linford Christie and British champion James Dasaolu going quicker.

Ujah also broke the British Under-23 record with his performance in Hengelo.

The Enfield and Haringey Harrier is the quickest Briton over the distance this year and set a European age-20 best.

Fellow Briton Harry Aikines-Aryeetey finished fifth in the same race, equalling his personal best of 10.08, with James Ellington (10.18) in ninth.

Ujah is the reigning 100m European junior champion and had already made an impression in his first year as a senior athlete by finishing fourth, external in the 60m at this year's British Indoor Championships.

He trailed James Dasaolu, Dwain Chambers and world 60m indoor champion Richard Kilty in that race in Sheffield, but has now surpassed the lifetime bests of both Chambers and Kilty.

Ujah set his previous personal bests , externalearlier this year, recording a wind-assisted 10.14secs at the Great Manchester Games , externalin May and a legal 10.17secs in Loughborough a day later.

The sprinter is coached in London by Jonas Tawiah-Dodoo, who is also the coach of Olympic long jump champion Greg Rutherford.
