British Athletics Championships: Danny Talbot wins 200m title

Danny Talbot said he had "proved a point" by claiming the 200m title at the British Championships.

The 23-year-old finished in a time of 20.42 seconds to claim his first United Kingdom outdoor title in miserable conditions in Birmingham.

Adam Gemili's season's best time of 20.61 gave him silver.

Talbot said missing out on selection for last year's World Championships was the "most heartbreaking thing that's happened to me in the sport".

He added: "Me and my coach went away, set up a plan and trained so hard over the winter, so it's really nice to come back and prove a point."

The British Championships are doubling up as trials for the European Championships in Zurich in August.

Gemili, whose heat on Friday was his first 200m race of the year, revealed he had suffered cramp in his foot but praised Talbot.

"He's been one of my best mates in the sport for the last couple of years," said Gemili. "He's been unlucky with making teams so for him to come and win it... I'm so happy for him."

Heptathlete Katarina Johnson-Thompson was unable to add the British outdoor high jump title to her indoor crown.

The 21-year-old's 1.86m effort was good enough for second.

Isobel Pooley clinched the title with a 1.90m jump, but she fell three centimetres short of the qualifying standard for the European Championships.

The top two in each event at the three-day meet in Birmingham achieve automatic qualification for Zurich, as long as they have also secured the qualifying standard.

Nine Britons have achieved the qualifying mark in the men's 100m.

Two of those - world 60m indoor champion Richard Kilty and Chijindu Ujah, the fifth fastest man in the world this year, progressed to Sunday's semi-finals.

There were no surprises in the women's 100m heats as favourites Jodie Williams and Asha Philip went through to Sunday's semis.

European Under-23 champion Williams (22.79 secs) should be confident about a potential final showdown with Philip after holding off a late challenge from Bianca Williams to win the 200m title.

There was also an exciting finish in the women's 1500m, Laura Weightman beating Scotland's Laura Muir to the line to win in 4:09.77.

The women's 100m hurdles unfolded as many expected, world bronze medallist Tiffany Porter retaining her title with ease in 12.85 seconds.

Niall Flannery's impressive season in the men's 400m hurdles continued. The 23-year-old, the fastest European this season, secured his first British title and achieved the qualifying standard for Zurich with a time of 49.54 seconds.

In the absence of Olympic champion Greg Rutherford and former British record holder Chris Tomlinson in the long jump, JJ Jegede made sure of his place in Zurich with a 7.83m winning leap.

There was a seventh 800m title for Michael Rimmer, who burst through on the inside lane in the home straight to win in 1:48.00.

There were also victories for Eilish McColgan (9:50.06) in the women's 3,000m steeplechase and James Wilkinson (8:37.36) in the men's event.

Eden Francis, 25, repeated her 2012 shot put and discus double, while Wales' Lee Doran won his third consecutive British javelin title.

Two centimetres was the difference between first and second in the women's triple jump, Yamile Aldama taking the title ahead of Laura Samuel thanks to a 13.60m final leap.
