Katarina Johnson-Thompson's coach will not use Jessica Ennis-Hill's return to athletics as a "cattle prod" to get the best out of his athlete.

Olympic heptathlon champion Ennis-Hill was third in the 100m hurdles at the Great City Games in Manchester.

It was her first event since 2013 after injuries and the birth of her son.

"You don't rock up and try and take on Jess. It's like kicking the Queen in the shins, you just don't do it," said Mike Holmes.

"We've got the utmost respect, total respect for her.

"They get on so well, so I don't think I'd use Jess like a cattle prod in Kat's case."

Johnson-Thompson has taken advantage of fellow Briton Ennis-Hill's near two-year absence to establish herself as the new dominant force in multi-eventing.

The 22-year-old finished 2014 as world number one in the heptathlon.

She also broke Ennis-Hill's British record to win pentathlon gold at the European Indoor Championships in March.

The pair were scheduled to meet in the heptathlon in the Gotzis Hypo-Meeting in Austria on 30-31 May, although Ennis-Hill's coach, Toni Minichiello, has said the 29-year-old may not be ready for that event.

Johnson-Thompson may also miss that competition because of a minor knee injury and instead ensure she was fit for the World Championships in Beijing in August.
