European Cross Country Championships: Britain top table

Britain topped the medal table at the European Cross Country Championships for a 13th consecutive year as every team member won a medal in France.

Jonathan Davies won gold in the men's under-23 race, a victory which helped the men's U23 squad to team silver.

"I'm over the moon. I came thinking I had a chance of winning but you never quite believe it," Davies, 21, said.

Kate Avery won silver for a second successive year in the senior women's race won by Dutchwoman Sifan Hassan.

Avery, who produced a strong final lap in Hyeres, said: "I've finished behind an amazing athlete in Sifan Hassan, so there isn't much more I could have asked for there."

Britain's senior women successfully defended their team title, with defending champion Steph Twell (sixth) and Gemma Steel (eighth) the other best-placed Britons.

Laura Muir claimed fourth in her race to lead the women's under-23 squad to a gold which was Britain's 50th in the history of the championships.

"It's a team effort as much as individual at these championships, so I'm chuffed for them all to get the gold," the 22-year-old Scot said.

Harriet Knowles-Jones, 17, won silver in the junior women's race, finishing behind Germany's Konstanze Klosterhalfen. It was a second-place finish which helped the women's junior squad to team silver.

The senior men's team won bronze, while the junior men's team secured bronze with all six athletes finishing in the top 31.
