World medallist O'Connor named athlete of the year

World Championship silver medallist Kate O'Connor has been named the Irish National Athlete of the Year.
O'Connor claimed a silver medal in the heptathlon in the World Championships in Japan in September.
The 24-year-old also won an indoor world silver and European bronze in the pentathlon, and a heptathlon gold medal at the World University Games in a stellar year.
O'Connor broke her own Irish heptathlon and pentathlon records and, as well as winning the main prize, was named the Field and Multi Event Athlete of the Year at the annual national awards in Dublin.
Three-time Olympian Derval O'Rourke, who claimed World Indoor gold in the 60m hurdles in 2006, was inducted in the Hall of Fame.
Nicola Tuthill, who won a silver medal at both the World University Games and European Under-23 championships, was named Under-23 athlete of the year while Fionnuala McCormack was named Endurance Athlete of the Year.
Cian McPhillips (UCD AC) was crowned Track Athlete of the Year after a historic season that saw him finish fourth in the 800m at the World Championships in Tokyo, and Conor Kelly was named Under-20 athlete of the year.
