Wightman eyes Scottish clean sweep at Glasgow 2026

Jake Wightman this week added a World Championship silver medal to his 2022 gold

World Championship silver medallist Jake Wightman says he, Josh Kerr and Neil Gourley could claim a Scottish clean sweep at next summer's Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

The trio all raced in the 1500m final in Tokyo this week, with Wightman claiming second place, to go with his gold from 2022.

Kerr, world champion in 2023 and an Olympic silver medallist last year, was injured in that final, while Gourley finished 10th.

"Myself, Josh Kerr and Neil Gourley, we could potentially try to get ourselves all through on the podium, which would be an immense thing to happen in a home Commonwealth Games," Wightman said.

"It's quite a nice moment. I started my championship career in Glasgow in 2014 when I was just a student. So to finish [with] a Commonwealth Games in Glasgow is pretty nice."

Wightman, 31, believes having two major competitions in the UK in 2026 is an opportunity he may not get again in his career.

The former Edinburgh Athletics Club runner has struggled with injuries since his triumph in Eugene [Oregon] two years ago, but bounced back strongly in Tokyo.

Now Wightman is targeting double glory on home soil next year.

"We also have a European Championships in Birmingham, which I'm sure is going to be electric as well," he said.

"So there's a lot of reasons why Brits are going to make sure we step up next year because there's nothing quite like performing in front of a home crowd."

He added: "I hope that we can try to make the most of next year because you don't know if we're going to get another one like that.

"I feel like now that I've managed to work out what my year's like, this is possible before I finally hang up the spikes for good at some point."
