Australian newspaper's Broad ban 'part of the rivalry'

Australia's Courier Mail has refused to print England cricketer Stuart Broad's name or picture in its coverage of the first Ashes test in Brisbane.

Michael Westlake, Sports Editor of the Courier Mail, told the Today programme that the newspaper's actions are "part of the rivalry" between the two sides.

"We went through this in the past decade when Shane Warne was touring [in England] with the Australian team, and the English press gave him a hard time. Which we all thought was hilarious," he continued.

Mr Westlake admitted Stuart Broad is a "great player" who "really thrives on that pressure and animosity from opposition crowds".

The newspaper, he said, decided to go one step further and "ignore [Broad] altogether".
