Wigan manager defends Callum McManaman after the player injures Newcastle's Massadio Haidara during his first Premier League start in the Latics' 2-1 win.

The Spaniard puts the challenge down to the "enthusiasm of a full debut" arguing the striker "is not that type of player" and wishes the Toon defender "a speedy recovery".

Arouna Kone's last-minute goal gave Wigan the vital three points after Davide Santon had equalised following Jean Beausejour's first-half opener. The win sees Wigan move to within three points of safety with a game in hand over the three sides above them.
