Netherlands' Ron Vlaar and Wesley Sneijder both had their spot kicks saved by Argentina keeper Sergio Romero, and Maxi Rodriguez scored to send Argentina through.

Argentina will now face Germany in Sunday's World Cup final in Rio, following the Germans' 7-1 win over hosts Brazil.
