Walsall: Dean Smith proud to lead Saddlers to Wembley

Walsall boss Dean Smith tells BBC Midlands Today's Ian Winter that he is proud to become the first manager in the club's 127-year history to lead a team to Wembley.

A 2-0 Johnstone's Paint Trophy northern area final aggregate win over Preston North End was sealed by Tuesday's goalless second-leg draw at the Banks's Stadium.

It booked a meeting with either Bristol City or Gillingham on Sunday, 22 March - City hold a 4-2 lead after the first leg of their tie with the Gills.

"It's a very proud moment for me," said Smith. "I was quite calm throughout. I never thought it was in any doubt. My two centre-halves, Paul Downing and James Chambers, were outstanding. We restricted them to very few chances until late on.

"I've led out a team at Wembley as a player," added Smith, who skippered Orient to the 1999 Division Two play-off final. "It will be extra special to do it as manager. I'm so pleased for everyone involved, none more so than the chairman Jeff Bonser."
