Ferrari's Fernando Alonso heads McLaren's Jenson Button in a delayed first practice session for the US Grand Prix.

The Spaniard was 0.028 seconds quicker than Button, who was later handed a three-place grid penalty, in a session subject to an extensive delay because of problems with the weather and the absence of a medical helicopter.

Toro Rosso also gave a first practice outing to Russian rookie Daniil Kvyat after signing the GP3 champion to drive for the team in 2014.
