First GAA match under new rule

Armagh and Down compete in the first Gaelic football match to be staged with the new 'black card' rule in operation.

The rule sees players who commit fouls, like dragging down opponents, having to be substituted.

However, a team is allowed just three black card substitutions in one match - and subsequent cards would result in a player being dismissed with no replacement allowed.

Armagh beat Down by a point in the Ó Fiaich Cup match - but there were no black cards issues by referee Martin Higgins.

It was an open, free flowing game of football. When the stakes increase, and games are played with an increased edge, the black cards will surely follow.
