Rio 2016 Olympics: Ireland men beaten again as GB draw with New Zealand

Ireland men's hockey team suffered their second defeat in Rio as Great Britain earn first point by drawing 2-2 against New Zealand.

Michael Watt, one of seven Ulstermen in Ireland's 16-man Rio squad, says the team believe they can still challenge for a quarter-final place despite Sunday's 5-0 defeat by world number two ranked side the Netherlands.

Ireland face defending champions Germany in another tough game on Tuesday but their hopes of qualification will probably depend on their remaining group matches against Canada and Argentina on Thursday and Friday.

"We're not just here to make up the numbers. We want to get to the quarter-finals," said Watt.

Cookstown's David Ames, one of four Northern Ireland men in the Great Britain squad, remained upbeat despite being held by the Kiwis which came after their opening 4-1 defeat by Belgium.

"There are no easy games at the Olympics. We've got a quarter-final format here so it's all about getting in the top four and qualifying," said Ames.
