Warren Gatland surprised by the timing of Adam Jones' retirement

Wales coach Warren Gatland says he was surprised by the timing of prop Adam Jones' retirement from international rugby.

The Cardiff Blues tight-head decided to retire after being left out of the Wales squad for the 2015 Six Nations.

Gatland says although he respects Jones' decision he would have "preferred it" if the former Osprey had hung up his international boots after the Rugby World Cup in autumn 2015.

Wales kick off their Six Nations campaign at home against England on Friday, 6 February in Cardiff.
