Wales would be ‘foolish’ to give up Sevens spot, says Tal Selley

Former Wales Sevens player Tal Selley says he is shocked by proposals for Wales to combine with England and Scotland to form a permanent Great Britain team.

The three nations compete separately in the Sevens World Series but combined as Team GB at the Rio Olympics in 2016, securing silver as the sport made its Olympics debut.

Selley was part of the Wales side which won the World Cup Sevens in 2009., external

The Welsh Rugby Union dismissed the proposals as "speculation" at this stage and Welsh rugby's governing body says it continues to plan for the future of a Wales Sevens squad.

"The Welsh Rugby Union is fully focused on the Wales Sevens programme and will not be drawn further on the speculation regarding a permanent Great Britain Sevens team," said the WRU statement.

"The entire Wales Sevens squad, including coaches and backroom staff, has done a terrific job this season in ensuring we proceed into 2018 with high hopes for both the Commonwealth Games and the Rugby World Cup Sevens."
