Australian Open: Maria Sharapova questions play in 42C heat

Maria Sharapova questions whether play should have continued in to a third set, after her second round victory at the Australian Open against Karin Knapp.

The 2008 champion edged a punishing encounter 6-3 4-6 10-8 as both players struggled with the heat, which halted play on outside courts.

Third seed Sharapova was tested to the limit in a match which lasted three hours and 28 minutes in temperatures that reached 42.4C. The deciding set alone, played in the hottest part of the day , took one hour and 55 minutes.
