Elise Christie shocked at being world number one speed skater
British speed skater Elise Christie says it was "a shock" to discover she was the new world number one, after winning a silver medal in the first World Cup of the new season in Calgary last month.
It was the Scot's second podium finish in three races and means she has a 600-point lead over nearest challenger Valerie Maltais of Canada with three World Cup rounds remaining.
Christie also says she wants her sport "to get bigger" in Britain, and hopes a strong showing at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi will help change attitudes to speed skating.
