The Padres finish it off with a double play and ensure a big win to keep their season alive with a shutout of the Cubs at Wrigley Field.

Manny Machado's huge home run in in the fourth inning was enough to win it 3-0.

But the win really came from a fantastic job by the six pitchers used by the Padres who have made sure the National League Wild Card Series is going to a decider.

The Cubs came back to win 3-1 in last night's opening game and can wrap up the series with another win this afternoon.

The Padres must win today and again on Thursday if they can force a decider, but they have been here before and won in the Wild Card Series in 2020, 2022 and 2024.

Will they be able to level the series up?

The bases are loaded after consecutive walks given up by Tyler Bibee and Javi Baez steps up to take full advantage.

He hits a groundball single to centre field which brings home Riley Greene to score and it's all square.

For a moment it looked like they had taken the lead but the Guardians challenged whether Zach McKinstry was out at third and were successful so the inning is over.

This is knockout baseball at its best!

  17. Detroit Tigers v Cleveland Guardians previewpublished at 16:09 BST 30 September

On September 4th, the Detroit Tigers enjoyed a huge 11-game lead over the Cleveland Guardians at the top of the American League Central division, but since then everything has changed.

In the last month of the season the Guardians were the form team in Major League Baseball, winning 20 games and losing just seven. The Tigers meanwhile collapsed to a shocking seven wins for 17 losses.

That all meant on the final day of the regular season the Guardians were able to complete the most extraordinary comeback to win the division and secure home advantage in this Wild Card series.

No team has overcome such a big gap (15.5 games) to win a division since 1969, but both sides will be well aware of how easily form could go out of the window as we enter the post-season.

October is about knockout baseball, a different task altogether to the league structure of the regular season, and it all starts with this make-or-break three-game series in Cleveland.

The Detroit Tigers' Riley Greene has hit 36 home runs this season.

The Tigers had three players in the starting line-up of the American League team in this season's All-Star Game, more than any other franchise.

Riley Greene was among them and is their best home-run hitter with 36 home runs this season, putting him in the top ten for home runs across both leagues.

Guardians' veteran Jose Ramirez was their only starting player in that All-Star Game and has enjoyed a special season.

With 30 home runs and 168 hits, the 33-year-old is enjoying the best form of his life for the team he has represented since 2013.

  18. San Diego Padres v Chicago Cubs previewpublished at 16:08 BST 30 September

Venue: Wrigley Field, Chicago, Illinois, USA

    Date: Wednesday, 1 October

Coverage begins: around 20:00 BST on iPlayer, BBC Sport website and app

The San Diego Padres and Chicago Cubs are arguably a little unlucky to both be in the Wild Card Series and not to have won their division titles.

Both sides won at least 90 games (92 for the Cubs, 90 for the Padres) which is usually a decent mark to push for top spot in the division, but the Los Angeles Dodgers in the West and the Milwaukee Brewers in the Central were too strong.

    Image caption,

Fernando Tatis Jr. is among the key players for the San Diego Padres.

The Padres have made it to the post-season four times in the last six seasons and should be full of confidence given they have beaten three different opponents in the Wild Card in 2020, 2022 and 2024.

In Manny Machado they have one of the greatest players of his generation and he has proven it once more this season with an impressive 27 home runs and 169 hits.

They also have plenty of depth in the shape of Fernando Tatis Jr., whose 111 runs scores is the joint-fifth most in Major League Baseball, and in Luis Arraez who has recorded a massive 181 hits - the joint-second most across the leagues.

    Image caption,

Pete Crow-Armstrong has 31 home runs for the Chicago Cubs this season.

The Cubs have made it to the post-season for the first time since 2020 after a big rebuild that has seen the rise of talented young players like Pete Crow-Armstrong mixed with a reliable foundation of experience and star quality in the shape of players like Kyle Tucker.

Their slightly superior record in the regular season means they have home advantage in this Wild Card Series.

Aaron Judge and the New York Yankees will enter the post-season in the Wild Card series against the Boston Red Sox.

After the 162-game regular season came to an end on Sunday, now the 12 best teams in Major League Baseball (six from the American League and six from the National League) are left to battle it out for the title of World Series champions.

Eight of those teams enter the post-season at the first stage - the Wild Card series. They play each other in a best-of-three match knockout series with the winner advancing and the loser's season at an end.

The four teams who advance will face the four teams who received Wild Card byes for having the best record in the regular season in the best-of-five Division Series starting live on iPlayer on Saturday night.

The regular season home run leader Cal Raleigh will begin the post-season in the Division Series with the Seattle Mariners.

The four winners of the Division Series move on to the best-of-seven Championship Series where the American League and National League champions are decided.

The two winners of the Championship Series (the American League champions and the National League champions) then face off in the World Series at the end of October to decide the greatest team in baseball in 2025.

It all starts with the Wild Card fixtures:

    • Detroit Tigers v Cleveland Guardians (live on BBC iPlayer)
    • San Diego Padres v Chicago Cubs (live on BBC iPlayer)
    • Boston Red Sox v New York Yankees
    • Cincinnati Reds v Los Angeles Dodgers
