Worcester Wolves: Alex Owumi targeting BBL Trophy glory

Worcester Wolves captain Alex Owumi says they must now complete the job and win the BBL Trophy after reaching their first-ever domestic basketball final.

Wolves beat defending champions Sheffield Sharks 84-70 in the second leg of their semi-final for a 146-130 aggregate win.

"That's not the job. The job is actually winning the final," guard Owumi told BBC Hereford and Worcester.

"I just wasn't ready to let us lose - it just wasn't happening."

Worcester went into the second leg of the tie at the University Arena defending a slender two-point lead from the first leg in Sheffield.

The home side built a 20-point advantage during the first half but saw the Sharks hit back to level the scores on the night at 66-66 in the final quarter.

But Wolves, who currently lead the BBL Championship, responded and kept their lead to close out a historic victory with guard Zaire Taylor top-scoring with 30 points.

Worcester's preparations for the game were disrupted by illness, as key centre Will Creekmore was unable to train because of a stomach bug.

"Sometimes you have to dig deep and get that 'W'," said Owumi, who contributed 18 points.

"It's great for the locker room. Will Creekmore was sick the whole week and it's great we came together."

After narrowly missing out on reaching the final of the same competition in 2013 and losing another semi-final - in the BBL Cup - in 2012, Worcester will face either Glasgow Rocks or Cheshire Phoenix in the final in Glasgow on Sunday 30 March.
