Oscar De La Hoya to help plot Anthony Ogogo future

Unbeaten British middleweight Anthony Ogogo says legend Oscar De La Hoya will oversee the next stage of his career.

Ogogo has claimed seven consecutive wins since turning professional and stopped Wayne Reed in his latest fight on Saturday.

The 25-year-old is signed to 10-times world champion De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions agency.

"Now Oscar is taking over the reins properly, it's up to him to guide my career," Ogogo told BBC Radio Suffolk.

"When I'm over in Los Angeles next month, me and my team are going to sit down with him and look where my career is going from here. It should be an exciting few months."

Lowestoft's Ogogo, a 2010 Commonwealth Games silver medallist and 2012 Olympic bronze medallist, knocked down Reed within the first 30 seconds of their Liverpool bout and went on to win with a fifth-round stoppage.

De La Hoya, a world champion at six different weights, is expected to take a more hands-on role with Golden Boy after the departure of the firm's chief executive and figurehead Richard Schaefer last month.

Last week, Los Angeles-born De La Hoya described Ogogo as having the "poise and power necessary for a title shot and to be a world champion".

"Is there anyone in boxing who knows more than Oscar? Probably not," said Ogogo.

"To hear that from somebody as esteemed as him was very kind."

Ogogo has fought in Atlantic City and Las Vegas, as well as around the UK, and is poised to be on a Golden Boy card in Los Angeles on Saturday, 16 August.

"You have to learn from your Liverpools and you have to learn from your Las Vegases," he said.

"I've come through unscathed and in five weeks in LA I'll fight again, hopefully against a tough American opponent.

"Towards the end of the year I'll look to be securing an English title."
