Amir Khan says he wants to inspire fans to demand a fight between himself and Floyd Mayweather.

But Mayweather is still eyeing a lucrative showdown with Manny Pacquiao.

Britain's Khan, 28, fights Devon Alexander in Las Vegas on Saturday and he is hoping an explosive victory will prompt increased calls for him to face five-weight world champion Mayweather.

"I want the boxing fans around the world to demand a fight between me and Floyd," Khan said.

"I want them to demand it when they see Amir Khan in such a good fight."

Bolton fighter Khan continued: "They're going to be like, 'wow, he should fight Mayweather'.

"I don't just want it to happen, I want people demanding it. It's going to be a tough fight [against Alexander] but I don't just want to win it, I want to win it in style."

Khan floored Luis Collazo three times in a points win in May

The obvious flaw in Khan's plan is Mayweather's desire to face Filipino star Pacquiao in May, in what could become the richest fight in boxing history.

"We want the fight, we are ready," Mayweather said. "Let's make it happen on May 2. Mayweather versus Manny Pacquiao.

"I am not ducking or dodging any opponent. I wanted that fight a long time ago and I am just waiting on them."

Mayweather previously offered Pacquiao $40m to take the fight but the sum was rejected.

It would be a further frustration to Khan if Mayweather was to look at alternative options.

The American has twice opted to fight Argentine Marcos Maidana instead of taking on the Bolton-born fighter, who also had a scheduled meeting against Alexander, who was then a world champion, fall through.

And clearly Khan, who returned from a 13-month lay-off with a points win over veteran American Luis Collazo on his welterweight debut in May, is still keen to make the Mayweather fight happen.

At the weigh-in for Saturday's fight with Alexander, both fighters tipped the scales right on the 10st 7lbs limit.

Khan says his work with trainer Virgil Hunter has helped him to develop and improve his fighting style.

"I'm still going to be the fighter that I've always been but I'm just going to be smarter," he added. "When I put an attack together there has got to be a reason for it.

"You can be exciting and come forward and throw a lot of punches, but be careful at the same time.

"That's what Virgil has brought to the table - he has made me a fighter who understands everything I have to do in the ring."
