Brian Rose was stopped by Carson Jones in the first round of their WBC international light-welterweight fight in Blackpool.
American Jones had been rocked by Rose in the first minute of their meeting at the Winter Gardens in Rose's home town.
But Jones recovered to land a flurry of right hands to the head that made a shaken Rose stumble.
Following a savage left hook from Jones, referee Ian John-Lewis intervened to stop the contest.
"I'm devastated. I don't think it should have been stopped," Rose told Sky Sports. "He caught me and I felt a buzz, but the referee didn't give me a chance."
Rose, who will turn 30 on Sunday, failed in his bid for the WBO world title in June 2014 when he was stopped by American Demetrius Andrade in New York.
"I had him going. I'm sure I hurt him more than he hurt me. I'm raging, I am so annoyed at the referee's decision," Rose added.
"He said before he would give us both a chance if we were hurt, but he did not give me a chance."
