Sean McComb is through to the last 16 of the World Boxing Championships in Doha

Seán McComb eased through to the last 16 of the World Boxing Championships after a unanimous 3-0 win over Mexican Lindolfo Delgado Garca in Doha.

The Belfast lightweight recovered from an edgy second round to secure a place in round two on Friday.

McComb, a European bronze medallist, won the first round 10-9 but lost the second by the same score.

The 23 year old, making his debut at this level, did enough to win the third and advance on a 29-28 verdict.

"I'm very happy," said the Holy Trinity southpaw.

"My coaches got the tactics right, I said before that if I listen to them and get the tactics right that I'd win," said.

McComb's win on Wednesday sets up a rematch with number three seed Albert Selimov of Azerbaijan, who defeated the Belfast native in a tight European Games semi-final in Baku in June.

Belfast light-flyweight Brendan Irvine is also through to the last 16 following a 3-0 win over Nico Hernandez in his opening fight.

Irvine dominated the contest to secure a meeting with Turkey's Muhammet Unlu in the last 16 on Thursday.

"It's good to get Ireland off to a winning start and hopefully the rest of the lads can do the business," said Irvine.

Irvine won a silver medal at the European Games in Baku in June.
