I've just had a similar experience with one of our colleagues here in the office!

It appears Vengaboys-fever is very much in full swing.

There is a bloke in the crowd who appeared possessed when Vengaboys just played out in the arena.

I saw him jump out of his seat within seconds of the song coming on, he was throwing his hands and rocking his head back and forth erratically.

As soon as it finished, he slid back down into his seat.

It was odd, and slightly scary, to be honest. But I guess that's his jam.

  4. From scaffolding site to world title tilt in two yearspublished at 22:01 British Summer Time 5 October

Cruiserweight Jack Massey has the opportunity to change his life forever when he steps into the ring to face IBF champion Jai Opetaia in Saudi Arabia on 12 October.

As recently as 2022, Massey was working on a scaffolding site due to contract issues with a promoter, leading to no fights being made.

"I had to come out of the gym and get working because I've got a family to pay for," Massey said.

"My brother helped me out with his boss, got me a job on the scaffolding site and that just kept me ticking over, but it gave me that push, as in 'I don't want to be back doing this. I want to get back to boxing, really push on and make something of it'."

Massey is no stranger to rolling the dice, having stepped up to heavyweight for a competitive 10-round contest against Joseph Parker in 2023.

That bout ended in defeat, just one of two on the Chapel-en-le-Frith's record, and despite not being able to pull off an upset on that occasion, Massey is hoping for a different result next weekend.

  5. 'Different story in the ring'published at 21:59 British Summer Time 5 October

The build-up to tonight's main event has been largely well-mannered.

Even Ronny Rios' manager insisted Nick Ball "deserved" his homecoming, although he went on to add that he had "unfortunately picked the wrong opponent".

Ball, who has picked up five stoppages from his last eight fights, seemed to be a little irked by that comment and was also surprised to hear that Rios was ready to fight fire with fire when they step into the ring.

"If he thinks he's going to get in there and push me back, he's got another thing coming," Ball said.

"It might sound good in front of the cameras, but once you get in the ring it's a different story."

Rios has lost two of his last seven fights with both of those defeats coming inside the distance.

What a win that was for Jack Rafferty. Henry Turner controlled the majority of the early rounds but was made to work hard by a persistent Rafferty who would not stop coming forward.

Rafferty bided his time and turned it on in the ninth, landing blow after blow. Turner winced after every punch. An intriguing fight with a brilliant ending.

Now we move to the main event.

  7. Rafferty beats Turnerpublished at 21:57 British Summer Time 5 October

The penultimate fight has just concluded with Henry Turner opting not to come off the stool for the 10th round after only just hanging on in the ninth.

Jack Rafferty put his foot on the gas, attacking body and head, before eventually sending Turner down to the canvas with just 10 seconds remaining. A really big right to the body of Turner was the telling blow.

Turner beat the count but has wisely accepted the advice of his corner to call it a night.

That's a first career defeat for Turner in his 14th fight, with Rafferty extending his unbeaten record to 24.

  8. Predictions - 'Ball wins by stoppage'published at 21:54 British Summer Time 5 October

Middleweight Denzel Bentley: "I feel like Ball is in a good place at the moment and now that he's a champion, he's going to hit another level and show why he's a world champion.

"Rios has been about a while and has been in with some good names but Ball is younger, fresher and even though he's the champion he's still hungry, so I'm going Ball by late stoppage."

Lightweight Sam Noakes: "I think Ball wins by stoppage in the middle rounds. I feel in his last few fights he's gone from strength to strength and I think it being his homecoming fight we are going see him at his best."

  9. Who is Ronny Rios?published at 21:52 British Summer Time 5 October

    That is the burning question.

Ronny Rios hails from Santa Ana in California and enjoyed a very successful career in the amateur ranks, becoming the National Golden Gloves bantamweight champion in 2007, while also picking up two US National Bantamweight championships.

He turned professional in 2008 and needed just one minute and 28 seconds to stop Fermin Perez.

Rios went unbeaten through his 23 fights until suffering a fifth-round loss against Robinson Castellanos in 2014.

Another five-win streak put him back on the path towards a world title and a meeting with Rey Vargas for the WBC super-bantamweight belt.

Vargas proved too much for Rios.

Performing at the top level has been an issue for the American, losing against Murodjon Akhmadaliev in an IBF super-bantamweight contest in June 2022.

Rios did bounce back to beat Nicolas Polanco in his most recent bout.

He has won 34 of his 38 bouts, with 17 coming inside the distance, and has been stopped on three occasions.

  10. 'I gave everything to boxing and still have nothing'published at 21:46 British Summer Time 5 October

Heather Hardy leans on the ropes in a boxing ringImage source, Getty Images

Former WBO featherweight champion Heather Hardy announced her retirement from boxing earlier this year on medical grounds after suffering from symptoms of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).

CTE is a brain condition linked to repeated blows to the head and concussion. The condition, which gradually gets worse over time and leads to dementia, can only be diagnosed post-mortem.

"What I learned after was that every time you get a concussion a piece of your brain dies and you never get it back, your brain just goes on living without it because it doesn't know what it lost," Hardy told BBC Sport.

"Over the years I've lost so much of my brain that I can't afford to lose anything else."

Hardy's last trip to the ring came in August 2023 when she lost against undisputed featherweight champion Amanda Serrano.

Since that defeat, Hardy's health has deteriorated to a place where she can no longer train or do any form of excessive exercise and she has been struggling to pay her bills.

  13. Predictions - 'back the exciting Nick Ball'published at 21:39 British Summer Time 5 October

Former lightweight world champion Anthony Crolla: "I think Ball has a strong claim to being the best active fighter in Britain right now. His draw against Rey Vargas should have been a win and he beat a world-class fighter in Raymond Ford.

"Ball is on a roll and has been superbly promoted. I see him being a little bit too strong for Rios and I believe he will get to him between rounds seven to nine.

Heavyweight Frazer Clarke: "I don't know much about Rios but I back the exciting Nick Ball. With the crest of the wave he is on, I'm a massive fan of his."

Welterweight world champion Natasha Jonas: "I think Ball wins. You try and play it down that it's just another fight but the reality is that you're in your home city as champion. All your friends and family will be there and you want to perform in front of them. As much as you don't want to put pressure on yourself, there is pressure.

"But as long as he does what Nick Ball does then he will have no problems in securing a great win and homecoming. I don't think Frank Warren would put him in a sticky situation where he could be toppled."

  14. Postpublished at 21:35 British Summer Time 5 October

We've already seen some very impressive stoppages tonight and we might be on track for another in this contest between Henry Turner and Jack Rafferty.

The pair, competing for the vacant British, WBC International silver and Commonwealth titles, have just start the fifth round and the big shots are landing regularly, mostly coming from Turner.

Well, it doesn't look like Nick Ball has been able to resist the temptation to eat pasta during fight week, Kal.

Ball looked in great shape at the weigh-ins on Friday, tipping the scales at 8st 13lb.

American Ronny Rios just slightly heavier at 9st.

If you tend to read anything into the face-offs, challenger Rios was the first to look away before Ball made his way off stage without a handshake.

I once asked Nick Ball how he might celebrate a win. He told me he will go out for an Italian. I asked for his favourite dish. He replied with "penne arrabiata" in a strong scouse accent. I responded with "cool."

It'd be a travesty if we [Anthony Joshua] didn’t fight.

No matter if he loses 20 more fights, if he doesn’t win another fight and he has 10 years away from the game. It doesn't matter, we have to fight.

It doesn’t matter if we're 50 years old, we’ll have to fight.

We're a bit light on the celeb spotting at the moment. Though, I'm probably not the greatest spotter. Seen a few folk who might or might not have been on Love Island.

But, Mr Tyson Fury is in the house.

The former world heavyweight champion arrived around 19:00 BST and was signing gloves and autographs. He cheered on his cousin Walter Fury in his points win over Dale Arrowsmith on the undercard.
