Summary

  1. Slimmed down Fury meets bulked up Usykpublished at 18:23 British Summer Time 17 May 2024

A lot has been made about Tyson Fury's slimmed down look this week.

The Briton tipped the scales at a joint-career high weight of 19st 8lb for his last fight against Francis Ngannou - he also came in at that weight for his third meeting with Deontay Wilder.

There is no doubt that he is taking this fight a lot more seriously than the Ngannou one - there's a lot more at stake - but what can we draw from the loss of weight?

Oleksandr Usyk's promoter Alex Krassyuk claims that it's because Fury is nervous, that's unlikely to be the case.

It could be that Fury wants to be more active, lighter on his feet and needed to shed a bit of weight to make that possible.

Usyk weighed-in at 15st 11lb for both of his fights with Anthony Joshua and he was just 1lb lighter last time out against Daniel Dubois.

Fury has claimed this week that he is walking around at 19st, we'll see how true that is shortly.

Most of us are expecting Fury to try and bully Usyk at some point in the fight, leaning on the Ukrainian and making him carry his large frame in an attempt to tire him out.

Even if Fury weighs-in at 19st then he could still be at least 4st heavier than Usyk.

Seems smart for Fury to sacrifice a bit of weight to improve his mobility, right?

Swimming forms a key part of Oleksandr Usyk's training. According to his manager, Egis Klimas, Usyk swam 10km nonstop as preparation and was able to hold his breath for four minutes and 40 seconds.

Juggling and catching coins are Usyk’s staple party tricks, but they too signify the importance he places on shaping his cat-like reflexes.

The training and focus paid dividends against Anthony Joshua - Usyk’s resilience and fitness levels were on full show when he outclassed the Briton for most of the 24 rounds they shared.

Usyk came in at 15st 11lb for both fights – which he seemingly feels is his optimal weight having tipped the scales around the same mark against Daniel Dubois in August.

Joshua was 20lb heavier and then 23lb in the rematch.

“I kept saying that Joshua was just too big, but the size was matched by just how good Usyk is,” Tony Bellew says.

Still there are those who still question Usyk’s heavyweight credentials.

Bellew describes Usyk as a "novice heavyweight in some ways" having never been pushed to his "absolute limit".

For Bellew, however, Usyk’s superiority and ability to find an extra gear is key.

“Usyk ticked all the boxes in the second AJ fight,” Bellew says. “Going into round nine or 10, he is behind or it’s level. Then going into the championship rounds, Usyk just finds another level.”

I cannot wait for this fight and history to happen. I'm 15 and I can't wait for there to be an undisputed champion! My father says that Fury will easily KO Usyk in round 8 but I'm not so sure. I see this ending in either 3 ways. Either a 10th round KO. A unanimous decision win. Or an even draw. But when it's all said and done, smart money's on Tyson Fury. Nonetheless, this showdown will be epic.

Not only is he a nice chap, Warren Jr is also the man credited with helping convince his dad and Matchroom's Eddie Hearn to bury the hatchet.

I’ve just been in and around more of those Tyson Fury fans and they don’t think Oleksandr Usyk is a threat at all.

Sam (great name by the way) told me: “This happens inside seven rounds easily. Tyson’s got this, Usyk doesn’t stand a chance with his height.

“Then the world will know Fury is the greatest of all time!”

Eddie Hearn really is a man of the people. Summoned over by British fans, he did not hesitate in going over.

He gets some grief sometimes, but I have never seen him refuse a photo request or autograph. He's the same with media, he is always the last man standing and makes sure he speaks to every outlet.

So, we get to see the fighters for one final time tonight before they get some much needed rest, steer clear of the media and focus in on tomorrow's mouthwatering contest.

We've been keeping a close eye on the weight of Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury this week, they both fit quite neatly into their suits for yesterday's news conference, but what are your thoughts?

Fury claims he is walking around at 19st, slightly lighter than usual, but still a mammoth of a man.

Do you think Fury has made the right call to come in lighter?

It's tough to tell with Usyk but I think he looks a little heavier.

Could an extra few pounds slow the Ukrainian down and hold him back from using his slick footwork?

  16. How Usyk grew into a heavyweightpublished at 17:55 British Summer Time 17 May 2024

BBC Sport looks Oleksandr Usyk’s transition from the world’s best cruiserweight to a unified heavyweight champion who dethroned Anthony Joshua in 2022, before winning the rematch just months after defending his country against the Russian invasion.

After defending his undisputed cruiserweight crown against Tony Bellew in November 2018, Usyk – with nothing left to achieve in the division – jumped to heavyweight.

For all his natural talent and boxing prowess though, there were question marks over whether he had the size to compete with boxing’s big boys. Only Evander Holyfield and Briton David Haye had won world titles in both divisions.

But with a strong focus on strength and conditioning, swimming and full-body workouts, Usyk steadily built into the weight.

It doesn't matter who wins this fight, unless there is a knockout, it will be a draw. People are getting wise to it, two weeks back a draw was 18/1 now it's 11/1.
