Glasgow 2014: Alistair Brownlee wants triathlon gold

Olympic triathlon champion Alistair Brownlee is prioritising Commonwealth gold ahead of the world title as he prepares for a World Series return.

Brownlee, 26, won the world crown in 2009 and 2011 but has never taken part in the Commonwealth Games, with triathlon omitted in Delhi in 2010.

The men's race in Glasgow will yield the first medal of the 2014 Games, with Brownlee making it his top target.

"Commonwealth gold would be the one this year," the Briton told BBC Sport.

"The world title's fantastic and it's obviously very important - it's the biggest thing in triathlon outside the Olympics.

"But I've won two already and I haven't won a Commonwealths, so the Commonwealth gold is definitely the priority this season. And who knows, I might not get another shot at it."

Brownlee missed the first two ITU World Series races this summer through injury, but returns in Yokohama on Saturday to take on the unbeaten Javier Gomez and younger brother Jonathan, who finished second behind the Spaniard in both Auckland and Cape Town.

It is the first time the three Olympic medallists have gone head-to-head this year and, while 2013 champion Gomez leads the World Series standings with five races plus the Grand Final to come, he has never won in three attempts in the Japanese city.

The calf injury which ruled Brownlee out in Cape Town a fortnight ago not only ended his hopes of doubling up at the Commonwealths in the track 10,000m, but also means he is chasing points throughout the remainder of the series.

The world title goes to the athlete with the best combined points total from five World Series events plus the Grand Final.

Brownlee added: "It would grate a little bit, not winning the world title. But I filled one of those years with the Olympic title and if I could fill this one with a Commonwealth title that would be good.

"You can't do everything. I'd love to win the world title again and I'm going to give that a good shot."
