English weightlifters won gold and silver on day four of the Commonwealth Games on Australia's Gold Coast as Wales' Laura Hughes took bronze.

Emily Godley, who moved to Australia in 2017, took gold by a kilogramme in the -75kg category, with Hughes third.

"It's been tough having my coach on the other side of the world," said Godley. "It was good to be reunited with him."

Sarah Davies, who was in a four-way tie for bronze at the halfway stage, came through to take -69kg silver.

Davies, who combines weightlifting with being a beauty queen, got into the sport while training to be a PE teacher at university in Leeds, where she was crowned Miss Leeds in 2012.

The 25-year-old matched the silver secured by her partner Jack Oliver on Saturday.

"He would have been quite upset if I'd got that gold medal," she said. "I couldn't have him beating me, so we had to at least match."

'The pressure was fully on'

Godley lifted her last clean and jerk attempt at 126kg to beat 2014 champion Marie-Eve Beauchemin-Nadeau of Canada.

"The pressure was fully on," said Godley, 28. "I didn't even know what weight was on the bar, I just knew I had to lift it."

Godley was competing at her third Commonwealth Games - she failed to register a score in Delhi and finished fifth in Glasgow, but they were at -63kg and this time she was lifting two weight divisions higher.

Hughes, meanwhile, only started competing in the sport three years ago.

Davies was sixth in the -63kg category at last year's World Championships - the best result by a British weightlifter for 15 years - and finished seventh at the same weight at Glasgow 2014.

She moved up to heavier category on the Gold Coast as England's Zoe Smith competed at the -63kg weight.

Davies completed a 128kg clean and jerk attempt in her final lift to finish with a total of 217kg, five off Punam Yadav of India, who won gold.

"Weightlifting is my job, whereas most people do sports for a hobby. Pageants are my hobby. It's my chance to get out of my tracksuit and 'glam up' a little bit," she said.

Wales' Faye Pittman finished in 10th place and Northern Ireland's Rebekah Thompson 12th.
