Imran Tahir close to Hampshire return

Hampshire overseas spinner Imran Tahir says he is close to first team action after recovering from a broken thumb.

Tahir, 32, who suffered the injury in South Africa's defeat by England at the World Cup in March, expects to return to the squad this week.

"Things are looking good. I think from a medical point of view I will need a couple more days until I am ready to play," he told BBC Radio Solent.

"I'll see how things go and check with the specialist after that."

Tahir continued: "This is the county where I made my name and started my cricket so I'm very happy to be back."

The Pakistan-born cricketer first joined Hampshire in July 2008 but left the club last year for Warwickshire before returning to the Rose Bowl ahead of this season.

Hampshire have suffered a poor start to their 2011 campaign, failing to win any of their opening five matches, and Tahir hopes his return will inspire a winning run.

"If I come into the team I hope I will just need to give my 100% and we'll win some games," he said.

"I'm sure Hampshire will catch up because they have a fantastic team."
