"Things are looking good. I think from a medical point of view I will need a couple more days until I am ready to play," he told BBC Radio Solent.

"I'll see how things go and check with the specialist after that."

Tahir continued: "This is the county where I made my name and started my cricket so I'm very happy to be back."

The Pakistan-born cricketer first joined Hampshire in July 2008, external but left the club last year for Warwickshire before returning to the Rose Bowl ahead of this season.

Hampshire have suffered a poor start to their 2011 campaign, failing to win any of their opening five matches, and Tahir hopes his return will inspire a winning run.

"I'm sure Hampshire will catch up because they have a fantastic team."
