Essex starlet Reece Topley signs pro deal

Essex bowling prospect Reece Topley has agreed a one-year professional contract at Chelmsford.

The 17-year-old seamer has taken 14 wickets in his three first class matches to date, including five-figure hauls in his first two outings, external.

He first made headlines as a 15-year-old when floored by a Kevin Pietersen shot, external during a practice session.

But the academy product has had his appearances restricted because of school commitments.

"I am really happy and excited to have signed a contract with the club," he told the club website.

"This is where I have been playing since the age of nine, I've grown up watching the players, who I now play alongside."

Reece is the son of former Essex all-rounder Don Topley.

"Reece is a very exciting prospect," said Essex head coach Paul Grayson. "I am delighted for him that he signed his first professional contract with Essex.

"He has already made a big impact in first-class cricket at a young age, taking five-wicket hauls against Kent and also versus Middlesex at Lord's.

"He will now look to continue developing and learning all the time as a player."
