England are in the hunt for Sri Lanka wickets as they seek a 2-0 series victory, but an early chance goes begging off James Anderson as Andrew Strauss and Graeme Swann get in a muddle in the slips

Sri Lanka's stand-in captain Kumar Sangakkara, along with nightwatchman Rangana Herath, frustrate the hosts at the Rose Bowl, as they take their team to 185-3 and a deficit of only eight behind England

England finally make the breakthrough after more than an hour's play when Graeme Swann traps Herath lbw for 36. Thilan Samaraweera joins Sangakkara at the crease and they keep Sri Lanka in good shape

England's task is made more difficult when fast bowler Stuart Broad is forced to leave the field through injury, the 24-year-old struggling with a bruised heel and heading back to the dressing-room to receive some treatment

Sangakkara, Sri Lanka's stand-in captain for this final match of the series, shows his undoubted class to make his highest score in Tests in England. In partnership with Samaraweera, he takes victory out of England's reach

Sangakkara's patience is eventually rewarded an hour after lunch as he takes a quick single to reach his first Test century against England on English soil, a game-saving effort that came off 217 balls with 13 fours

England's bowlers are made to toil, with captain Andrew Strauss rotating his attack to little effect as the Sri Lankan pair put on 141. In front of a sparse final-day crowd at the Rose Bowl, the game drifts towards a draw

England finally break the partnership midway through the afternoon session when Sangakkara guides a wide ball outside his off stump from James Anderson to the substitute fielder at point and is out for a superb 119

Samaraweera continues on his merry way, racing to 87 not out from 128 balls with nine fours as Sri Lanka reach tea on 334-5, a lead of 141 over England and with the game effectively safe

The rain starts to fall during the tea interval and it refuses to go away. Play is eventually abandoned for the day just before 1700 BST, a rain-hit series ending in predictable fashion with England winning the series 1-0

Captain Andrew Strauss celebrates England's fifth successive Test series win, while the giant Chris Tremlett is named man of the match for his first innings 6-48 and the man of the series as well
