Seamers Yasir Arafat and Tim Linley shared nine wickets as Surrey bowled out Gloucestershire for 286 on the opening day at Cheltenham.
Arafat (5-86) took five of the first seven wickets to fall before Linley mopped up the tail to finish with 4-59.
Will Gidman, fresh from his five-wicket haul on the same ground against Kent, external last week, this time contributed with the bat to top score with 85.
Surrey closed on 13-0 in reply after safely negotiating three overs.

"Surrey will definitely be the happier of the two sides after the first day at Cheltenham. Gloucestershire won the toss and batted first on a good wicket but Surrey were very disciplined with the ball, dismissing the home side for 286.
"Yasir Arafat was the pick of the bowlers with 5-86 and Tim Linley continued his recent good form with 4-59. Gloucestershire were indebted to an excellent innings from Will Gidman, who was the last man out for 85.
"Surrey will look to bat on the second day with the same disciplne their bowlers showed on day one."
