Essex battled back with bat and ball on the second day of their clash with Leicestershire to leave the game intriguingly poised.
Leicestershire resumed at Southend on 100-3, but leg-spinner Tom Craddock took 4-59 to bowl them out for 202 and restrict them to a lead of 58.
Billy Godleman hit 77 and Ravi Bopara 55 not out to bat Essex into the lead.
But Nadeem Malk (3-18) bowled Jaik Mickleburgh with the day's final ball as Essex closed on 168-4, 110 ahead.
