Gautam Gambhir to miss ODI series because of concussion

India batsman Gautam Gambhir will miss the rest of the tour of England because of continuing trouble with concussion.

The 29-year-old left-hander banged his head on the outfield while dropping a catch in the final Test at The Oval.

Although he continued playing in the match he has since suffered headaches and vision problems and has been advised by a specialist to fly home.

All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja will replace Gambhir in the squad for the one-day series starting on Saturday.

Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh, Ishant Sharma and Harbhajan Singh have also returned home because of injury.

Indian cricket board secretary N Srinivasan said: "Gambhir was sent for a precautionary CT and MRI scan of his head and neck which was reported as normal.

"However, he still complains of some visual disturbance and inability to focus on an object for long.

"Gautam has been advised to take rest and is expected to recover without any further medical intervention."

The tourists were thrashed 4-0 in the Test series, losing their world number one ranking in the process, but the World Cup winners now have a chance to make some sort of amends in the shorter form of the game, starting with Wednesday's Twenty20 clash, and then a five-match one-day international series beginning on Saturday.

Like many of India's senior batsmen Gambhir had a modest Test series, with only 102 runs in six innings with a highest score of 38.

In the one-day arena he has scored 4,073 runs from 114 internationals at an average of 40.73 and has recorded nine centuries, while in 23 Twenty20 internationals his average is 28.22.
