Nottinghamshire sign Leicestershire bowler Harry Gurney

Gurney has only played one County Championship match this season

Nottinghamshire have agreed to sign Leicestershire bowler Harry Gurney on a three-year contract.

The 24-year-old left-armer will stay with the FL t20 champions for next month's Champions League qualifying tournament before completing the move.

Gurney missed the Finals Day win because of a side strain but starred in the group stages, taking 23 wickets.

He said: "Notts have an excellent squad that is usually in contention in all formats and I want to be part of that."

Gurney was offered a new contract by Leicestershire in July, but has been lured by the prospect of making his mark in the Championship.

Despite being an integral part of the one-day side, he has only made only five Championship appearances in the last two seasons and is eager to develop his game.

"I've made my mark in limited overs cricket," Gurney added.

"But I think I can be more effective in four-day cricket given the way the red ball swings at Trent Bridge and the carry in the wicket."

Nottinghamshire director of cricket Mick Newell said: "Leicestershire tend to play two spinners in the Championship and Harry has found himself behind Matthew Hoggard and Nathan Buck, which has limited his appearances.

"He's had success in twenty-over cricket and our batsmen were impressed by the pace he showed in the matches against us.

"Left-arm swing is a good option for us to have at our disposal and we're pleased to have agreed this deal with Harry."

Gurney played club cricket for Loughborough Town before graduating from Leicestershire's age group system and making his first-class debut in 2007.
