Leicestershire slid towards defeat against Middlesex as their batsmen failed to produce a game-changing display at Lord's.

Following on 303 runs behind, the visitors needed something special in their second innings to save the game.

Greg Smith (84) and James Taylor (85) put on 132 for the fourth wicket, but the rest of their batsmen failed to impose themselves.

Leicestershire closed on 308-7 just five runs ahead.

CLOSE OF PLAY VIEWS

BBC London 94.9's Kevin Hand:

"James Taylor was again the star of the show as Leicestershire showed admirable resistance to Middlesex on the third day.

"The highly rated youngster displayed the poise and class that has accelerated him up the pecking order in the recent England Lions squads.

"Greg Smith finally found form as well and it came against one of the division's strongest attacks.

"Middlesex bowled well and now stand on the verge of a victory that will very nearly seal their long awaited return to Division One."
