Northants face an uphill battle to beat Surrey as they go into the final day at Wantage Road still needing 383 runs to win with only six wickets intact.
Steven Davies hit 156, supported by 108 from Zander de Bruyn in a fourth-wicket stand of 216, as Surrey declared on 410-6, setting Northants 486 to win.
But, despite 54 from Kyle Coetzer, the Division Two leaders have so far made a poor start, closing on 103-4.
Victory for Surrey would open the door for them to pip Northants to promotion.
CLOSE OF PLAY SUMMARY
BBC Radio London's Mark Church:
"Surrey have given themselves an excellent chance of not only winning this game but also keeping their promotion hopes alive.
"Steven Davies played very well for his 156, passing 1,000 first-class runs this season in the process. And Zander de Bruyn showed all his experience.
"The real worry for Northants was the way Pragyan Ojha bowled in the final session, as he got one to turn and bounce to dismiss Alex Wakely and then had David Sales caught at short leg."
