Pakistan v England: Matt Prior says defeat to Pakistan was a wake-up call

England wicketkeeper Matt Prior has described defeat to Pakistan in the first Test as a "real good slap around the face".

Prior was England's top scorer with 70 not out in the first innings as the tourists lost by 10 wickets in Dubai.

"We're a proud team," Prior told BBC Sport. "We're used to inflicting losses on other teams the way they beat us.

"It was a very bitter pill to swallow but there's a steely determination that it won't happen again."

The 29-year-old added: "Usually after poor performances, this England team has come back very strong.

"We're almost in our comfort zone now where we say 'right, we're going to come back now and win this series 2-1'."

It was England's first Test in five months, when they beat India by an innings and eight runs at the Oval, and Prior's first game at any level since September.

"Having that three-month break was invaluable. It was necessary but obviously it's quite tough to then come back," added Prior, echoing team director Andy Flower's assessment that England were "undercooked'' for the opening Test. for the opening Test.

"Getting used to the little things like the travelling to the ground on the morning of the Test match, the nerves, the time to switch on and switch off - I had to get used to that again.

"They are only things you can do when you're playing."

England and Pakistan travelled from Dubai to Abu Dhabi on Sunday, a journey which takes little more than an hour by road.

Many of the England players have now been joined by family members at the team hotel.

There was a noticeable intensity to the squad's training session on Saturday and they will resume practice on Monday ahead of the second Test starting on 25 January.
