Coles hit his maiden first class century against Yorkshire

Kent cricketer Matt Coles wants to be seen as an all-rounder after hitting the first County Championship century of his career.

The 21-year-old hit 103 not out in Kent's draw with Yorkshire at Headingley at almost a run a ball.

Coles told BBC Radio Kent: "I guess I'll have to call myself an all-rounder now.

"It'll definitely stick in my mind for a long time, let's hope it's the first of many."

Coles continued: "I got a bit giddy with about 30 needed. Thankfully I got there and got us to a big total which was good for the team which was the main thing."

Coles, who toured with both the England Performance Squad and the England Lions in the winter, admitted there were nervous moments when he was dropped on 56 and 95, and he was on 93 not out when number 11 Charlie Shreck came to the crease.

"The second one I had my head in my hands and I thought 'What have I done?'" said Coles.

"So I might have been out earlier but you have to take those chances when they come.

"It was a bit panic stations, but I thought if I keep the strike and not give Adil Rashid too many balls to Shrecky, so I did pick it up a bit, especially as the boys wanted to declare.

"I'm just grateful they let me get there!"
