An unbeaten century from Michael Powell saw Kent take control on day two against Northants.
Resuming on 127-3, just six runs behind, the visitors made 368 with seamer Jack Brooks (5-98) claiming five wickets for the hosts.
Powell hit 128 off 227 balls, while Geraint Jones made 53.
Northants ended the day in serious danger of suffering an innings defeat as they were restricted to 50-4, still 186 runs behind.
