County Championship Division One, Hove

Close, day three: Sussex 309 & 177-4, Nottinghamshire 428

Nottinghamshire 7pts, Sussex 5pts

Nottinghamshire's Riki Wessels narrowly missed out on the first double century of his career during the third day of his side's match against Sussex.

Wessels, who resumed on 184, was dismissed for 199 when he was caught behind off Steve Magoffin's bowling.

The visitors had begun the day on 320-4 and were all out for 428, a first innings advantage of 119 runs.

Sussex's Murray Goodwin ended his bad run with 52 not out as the hosts ended day three's play on 177-4.

They have a lead of 58 runs with six wickets remaining going into Monday's final day.

Wessels still claimed his highest first-class score of his career but fell agonisingly short of 200 after an innings that had lasted 278 balls and more than six hours.

Chris Read added 45 as Nottinghamshire scored more than 400, although it took them more than 110 overs so they only claimed four batting points.

Ed Joyce and Chris Nash, who scored 128 in the first innings, put on 64 for the first wicket but Sussex then lost three wickets for only four runs to look in danger on 68-3.

However, Zimbabwean Goodwin compiled his first half century of the season to end a miserable run of form that had seen him score only 39 runs in his previous eight innings.

Goodwin and Luke Wright (37 not out) shared an unbroken fifth-wicket partnership of 78 and the pair will be instrumental in Sussex's chances of claiming a victory on Monday.

VIEWS FROM THE COMMENTARY BOX

BBC Radio Sussex's Adrian Harms:

"A day of County Championship cricket at its very best, as Sussex battled their way back into contention at Hove.

"On a pitch taking some spin and occasionally keeping low, batting won't become any easier and Sussex will know if they can set a target in excess of 150 they will have a real chance.

"The biggest cheer of the day came when Murray Goodwin, who has been completely out of sorts, returned to form with a well-crafted 50.

"The standing ovation he received from the Hove faithful spoke volumes of the affection in which he is held by the Sussex cricket public.

"Tomorrow could be a cracking day with all three results still a possibility."

BBC Radio Nottingham's Dave Bracegirdle:

"Whatever the eventual outcome, this match has been a pleasure to watch - good cricket, decent crowds and warm sunshine.

"Sussex lead by 58 with six wickets left. The danger could be that Notts don't polish off the tail in the morning and the home side bat on and on, erring on the side of caution.

"Otherwise, a tasty little run chase over the last two sessions should give this contest the climax it deserves.

"It was disappointing to see Riki Wessels fall for 199 - a knock as good as that deserved the extra single."
