Yuvraj Singh has been preferred to Suresh Raina in the India squad for the first two Tests against England.
Yuvraj, 30, has not played Test cricket for a year after having treatment for a rare form of lung cancer.
But he made a successful international return in the World Twenty20 before taking five wickets and scoring a fifty for India A against England last week.
India have also recalled right-arm spinner Harbhajan Singh and opener Murali Vijay in their 15-man group.
Harbhajan, who last played a Test during India's 4-0 whitewash by England in 2011, offers back-up to frontline spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Pragyan Ojha.
Veterans Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag and Zaheer Khan are also in the squad that will be captained by Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
The first of four Tests begins on 15 November in Ahmedabad.
India's Test squad: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (capt), Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Cheteshwar Pujara, Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh, Ajinkya Rahane, Ravichandran Ashwin, Pragyan Ojha, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Umesh Yadav, Ishant Sharma, Murali Vijay.
