Close, day one: Surrey 237 v Durham 48-0

Surrey 1pt, Durham 3pts

Spinner Ryan Buckley took five wickets on his first-class debut to put Durham on top on day one against Surrey.

The home side's last four wickets went down without a single run being added as the 19-year-old from Darlington finished with figures of 5-86.

Arul Harinath (53), Zander de Bruyn (57) and Steven Davies (52) all batted well without capitalising fully.

And Durham's openers laid a solid foundation for their reply as they reached the close on 48-0.

Buckley was only drafted into the Durham squad on Thursday evening after Gareth Breese was ruled out of the game because of an injury.

After Callum Thorp had taken the first two Surrey wickets, he enjoyed his first success when Vikram Solanki (38) deflected a turning delivery into the hands of short leg.

Davies and de Bruyn added 84 for the fifth wicket, the former escaping when he gave a sharp head-high chance to Buckley off his own bowling, only for Scott Borthwick to find a way through to his stumps with a full toss.

Buckley then ran through the tail, and told BBC Radio Newcastle: "Everything seemed to happen right. I was given the opportunity and I've taken it, so I'm proud.

"Me and Scott Borthwick had a good partnership together, kept it tight and the pitch started spinning a bit - it worked well."

BBC London 94.9's Mark Church:

"This was a very good day for Durham and one that Ryan Buckley will not forget in a hurry. The young off-spinner's figures included a spell of three wickets in five balls, without conceding a run, as Surrey were all out.

"Surrey had looked in a good position on 221-4 after tea with both Steven Davies and Zander de Bruyn going well with fifties to their names.

"But Davies then fell for 52 and an amazing passage of play developed where the hosts lost six wickets for 16 runs, including their last four with the score locked on 237.

"Mark Stoneman and Will Smith then guided the visitors to 48-0 at stumps to complete an excellent, but busy final session for Durham."
