County Championship Division One, Edgbaston

Close, day two: Warwickshire 128 v Yorkshire 318-7

Warwickshire 2pts, Yorkshire 6pts

All-rounder Adil Rashid continued his excellent batting form as Yorkshire tightened their grip on the game against Warwickshire at Edgbaston.

Rashid followed his career-best 180 against Somerset with an unbeaten 68 as the visitors ended day two on 318-7.

Adam Lyth (43) and Andrew Gale (40) made useful contributions before Gary Ballance (52) added 78 with Rashid.

And Tim Bresnan weighed in with 38 before falling to Boyd Rankin (3-69) as Yorkshire opened up a lead of 190.

Having been bowled out for just 128 on the opening day, the arrival of Bresnan after being left out of England's Test XI at Lord's did not bode well for Warwickshire's chances unless they could dismiss the visitors relatively cheaply.

Lyth and Joe Sayers (24) set them on their way with an opening partnership of 77 before both fell to 6ft 8ins pace bowler Rankin in successive overs.

Gale had a slice of luck on 19 when Chris Woakes carried the ball over the boundary rope in taking a catch at long-leg, but he eventually departed when Rikki Clarke took a superb one-handed effort at slip off spinner Jeetan Patel, who later bowled Ballance after he had collected 10 fours in a 104-ball innings.

However, Bresnan helped add 75 for the seventh wicket with the unflappable Rashid before tickling a leg-side catch to wicketkeeper Tim Ambrose off Rankin in the penultimate over of play.
