Derbyshire v Sussex: Visitors wrap up convincing victory

Sussex made short work of Derbyshire on the final day as they completed a convincing nine-wicket victory.

It took the visitors only 7.5 overs to polish off Derbyshire's second innings, bowling them out for 219.

Pace bowler Steve Magoffin caught Richard Johnson off James Anyon (3-46) and then took the last two wickets himself to finish with figures of 4-44.

Sussex opener Chris Nash went for a duck, but needing only 41 to win, they hurried home on 43-1 in the sixth over.

Opener Luke Wells ended the match with successive boundaries to reach 23 not out, with Michael Yardy, whose magnificent 153 in the first innings had laid the platform for victory, unbeaten on 18 at the other end.

Only just over an hour's play was needed as Derbyshire, promoted as Division Two champions last year, slumped to their fourth defeat of the summer.

"We have got to get more consistent," said head coach Karl Krikken.

"We have to get better. We know that and we will be doing everything in our power to get it right."

Sussex cricket manager Mark Robinson described their haul of maximum points from the game as "outstanding".

He told BBC Sussex: "We've won two games out of four now and in the other two we had slightly the better of a draw at The Oval and [although] Warwickshire put us under a lot pressure, we came out even stevens in that match.

"I genuinely believe this is a group of players who can grow and get better over the next few years.

"We've got a bit of learning to do, but we've got to keep moving forward because there is a lot of potential in this squad,"
